  1. 1795

    Ceded to the United States

    By Treaty of Greenville, 1795

In the record

Ceded at the 1795 Treaty of Greenville, one of the small post tracts in Illinois, at Chicago, the mouth of the Illinois River and Peoria, that the tribes gave the United States. The area covers about 23 thousand acres in what is now Illinois.

The 1899 record names Chippewa (Ojibwe), Delaware (Lenape), Eel River, Kaskaskia, Kickapoo and 6 more as the people of this land.

How it was taken: a treaty made under documented pressure. The treaty text says it ended 'a destructive war' and e-WV reports it followed Wayne's military victory at Fallen Timbers.

Today, Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians of the Bad River Reservation, Wisconsin, Bay Mills Indian Community, Chippewa Cree Indians of the Rocky Boy's Reservation, Montana, Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, Michigan, Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin, Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and 36 more carry the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
