Land of the Chippewa, Delaware and others in Indiana and Ohio, ceded 1817 (area 87)

In the record

Ceded by the Wyandot and allied tribes at the 1817 Treaty of the Maumee Rapids, northwestern Ohio and part of Indiana. The area covers about 4.8 million acres in what is now Indiana and Ohio.

The 1899 record names Chippewa (Ojibwe), Delaware (Lenape), Ottawa, Potawatomi, Shawnee and 1 more as the people of this land.

How it was taken: a treaty made under documented pressure. The Myaamia Center blog says the Miami, who claimed part of the land, did not sign and viewed it as unjust, and describes mounting pressure on Native nations to sell.

Today, Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians of the Bad River Reservation, Wisconsin, Bay Mills Indian Community, Chippewa Cree Indians of the Rocky Boy's Reservation, Montana, Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, Michigan, Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin, Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and 30 more carry the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
