In the record
Assigned to the Sauk and Fox of the Mississippi in Kansas in 1842; this part was given up in 1859, to be sold on their behalf, and an 1867 treaty disposed of what remained unsold. The area covers about 239 thousand acres in what is now Kansas.
The 1899 record names Meskwaki (Fox) and Sauk (Sac) as the people of this land.
How it was taken: a treaty made under documented pressure. The Franklin County history portal says the U.S. government initiated the treaty to shrink the reservation and records a Sac and Fox leader stating he would be compelled to sign under protest; the treaty also provides for paying the Indians' debts from land sales.
Today, Sac & Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa, Sac & Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas and Nebraska and Sac & Fox Nation, Oklahoma carry the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
