In the record

Ceded by the Dwamish, Suquamish and allied tribes in the 1855 Treaty of Point Elliott, land in Washington. The area covers about 6.6 million acres in what is now Washington.

The 1899 record names Duwamish and Suquamish as the people of this land.

How it was taken: a treaty made under documented pressure. The National Park Service says Stevens pressured Puget Sound tribes into signing the 1854-55 treaties, and the Supreme Court notes the councils used an imperfect Chinook Jargon.

Today, Duwamish Tribe, Muckleshoot Indian Tribe and Suquamish Indian Tribe of the Port Madison Reservation carry the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
