Land area
Land of the Sauk and Fox in Iowa, ceded 1832 (area 175)
- 1832
Ceded to the United States
In the record
Ceded by the Sauk and Fox in 1832, the land in Iowa known as the Black Hawk Purchase. The area covers about 5.4 million acres in what is now Iowa.
The 1899 record names Meskwaki (Fox) and Sauk (Sac) as the people of this land.
How it was taken: a treaty made under documented pressure. The OSU treaty text ties the cession to the 1832 war, cites the United States action against the hostile band, and notes chiefs held as hostages.
Today, Sac & Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa, Sac & Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas and Nebraska and Sac & Fox Nation, Oklahoma carry the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
