Land of the Creek in Georgia, ceded 1826 (area 131)

Shape traced from the 1899 maps; approximate. Open on the map
  1. 1826

    Ceded to the United States

By Treaty of Washington (1826) with the Creeks

In the record

Ceded by the Creek in the January 1826 Treaty of Washington, a second tract in Georgia on the west bank of the Chattahoochee, enlarged by a supplement in March 1826. The area covers about 866 thousand acres in what is now Georgia.

The 1899 record names Muscogee (Creek) as the people of this land.

How it was taken: a treaty or agreement. The Statutes at Large text records a negotiated replacement treaty after a dispute over the earlier signers; the Encyclopedia of Alabama says the lost territory was not restored.

Today, Alabama-Quassarte Tribal Town, Kialegee Tribal Town, Muscogee (Creek) Nation, Poarch Band of Creek Indians and Thlopthlocco Tribal Town carry the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
