In the record

Kept by the Cherokee as the Spring Creek tract in the January 1806 treaty, then ceded to the United States in July 1817. The area covers about 0 thousand acres in what is now Alabama.

The 1899 record names Cherokee as the people of this land.

How it was taken: a treaty made under documented pressure. The Encyclopedia of Arkansas says increasing federal and state pressure on the Cherokee led to the 1817 treaty; the treaty text itself presents it as an exchange for those wishing to remove.

Today, Cherokee Nation, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians carry the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
