Reservation of the Cheyenne River Sioux in South Dakota (area 711)
- 1890
Set aside as a reservation
The 1899 record: “President reserves lands, including the school buildings, as follows: Commencing at a point in the center of the main channel of the Missouri river opposite Deep creek”
In the record
Set aside as a small tract around the school buildings for the Cheyenne River Sioux by presidential proclamation in February 1890; not a cession. The area covers about 43 thousand acres in what is now South Dakota.
The 1899 record names Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe as the people of this land.
This area was not ceded. The 1899 record shows it as a reservation the nation kept, at least until the record ends in 1894.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
