In the record

Kept by the Delaware as a Kansas reserve when they ceded land in 1854; the 1860 treaty divided part into allotments and sold the rest to a railroad, confirmed in 1861. The area covers about 333 thousand acres in what is now Kansas.

The 1899 record names Delaware (Lenape) as the people of this land.

How it was taken: a treaty or agreement. The treaty text records an agreement between a federal commissioner and Delaware chiefs; the Tribal Treaties Database text states no duress.

Today, Delaware Nation (Oklahoma), Delaware Tribe of Indians and Stockbridge Munsee Community carry the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
