Land area
Land of the Shawnee in Kansas, ceded 1854 (area 319)
- 1825
Set aside as a reservation
- 1854
Ceded to the United States
In the record
Given to the Shawnee of Missouri as Kansas land in 1825 and ceded in 1854; this part was set aside for allotments to absent Shawnee and later sold to settlers. The area covers about 501 thousand acres in what is now Kansas.
The 1899 record names Shawnee as the people of this land.
How it was taken: a treaty or agreement. The OSU treaty text records a negotiated cession for payment and individual allotment; the cited sources do not describe coercion at this treaty.
Today, Absentee-Shawnee Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma, Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma and Shawnee Tribe carry the history of the people named here.
Written from the records linked here; open any of them for its sources.
Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
