In the record
Set aside in 1817 as a 48-square-mile reserve at Lewistown for the Seneca and Shawnee and enlarged in 1818, then ceded to the United States in July 1831. The area covers about 47 thousand acres in what is now Ohio.
The 1899 record names Shawnee as the people of this land.
How it was taken: a removal treaty. The OSU treaty text says the treaty carries out the 1830 removal act and exchanges Ohio land for land west of the Mississippi.
Today, Absentee-Shawnee Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma, Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma and Shawnee Tribe carry the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
