In the record

Given up by the Cherokee living west of the Mississippi in 1828: they surrendered these lands in Arkansas in exchange for lands in Indian Territory. The area covers about 4.1 million acres in what is now Arkansas.

The 1899 record names Cherokee as the people of this land.

How it was taken: a removal treaty. Article 7 has the Cherokee surrender their Arkansas lands and leave within fourteen months in exchange for land farther west, so it sets a removal.

Today, Cherokee Nation, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians carry the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
