Land area
Land of the Wea in Indiana, ceded 1820 (area 114)
- 1818
Set aside as a reservation
- 1820
Ceded to the United States
In the record
Kept by the Wea as a 7-mile tract on the Wabash in the October 1818 treaty, then ceded to the United States in August 1820. The area covers about 24 thousand acres in what is now Indiana.
The 1899 record names Wea as the people of this land.
How it was taken: a treaty or agreement. The Oklahoma State treaty text records a signed cession for a stated payment; the tribe is described as contemplating removal, with no mention of coercion.
Today, Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma carries the history of the people named here.
Written from the records linked here; open any of them for its sources.
Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
