In the record
The United States made one treaty or agreement that names Kah-wé-as as a party: California Treaty K: Village of Temecula, 1852 (unratified).
The records group it with Cahuilla. Today, Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians of the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation, California, Augustine Band of Cahuilla Indians, California, Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians, California, Morongo Band, Ramona Band of Cahuilla, California, Santa Rosa Band of Cahuilla Indians, California and 1 more carry this history, as their own pages or research records say.
Written from the records linked here; open any of them for its sources. This is what the United States’ treaty record says, not the nation’s own account.

Kahwe-as = Kawia
Research notes
Named in an unratified California treaty of 1851-52. People: Cahuilla. Hodge index (vol. 2) equates "Kahwe-as" with Kawia, i.e. the Cahuilla ("a Shoshonean division in s. California"). Signed by Juan Antonio (Coos-woot-na), chief, and Leonardo of the people of Razon. Present-day ids are the Cahuilla bands named by OSU as Treaty K successors (low-medium); Cahuilla Band of Indians and Cabazon not in OSU list.
