By Treaty of St. Mary's with the Miami, 1818

In the record

Ceded by the Miami in the 1818 Treaty of St. Mary's, their lands in Indiana and Ohio. The area covers about 7.1 million acres in what is now Indiana and Ohio.

The 1899 record names Miami as the people of this land.

How it was taken: a treaty made under documented pressure. The Myaamia Center blog quotes agents proposing to bribe chief Richardville and describes pressure on the Miami to sell before losing the land by other means.

Today, Miami Nation of Indians of the State of Indiana, Inc. and Miami Tribe of Oklahoma carry the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
