The 1899 record: “President sets apart reserve in Indian Territory for lowas, as follows: Commencing at the point where the Deep Fork of the Canadian river intersects the VV. boundary of the Sac”

In the record

Set apart as a reserve for the Iowa in Indian Territory by executive order in August 1883; not a cession. The area covers about 174 thousand acres in what is now Oklahoma.

The 1899 record names Iowa as the people of this land.

This area was not ceded. The 1899 record shows it as a reservation the nation kept, at least until the record ends in 1894.

Today, Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska and Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma carry the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
