The 1899 record: “President restores a portion of White Mountain reservation to public domain, bounded as follows: Commencing at a point at the S. bank of Gila river where the San Pedro empties”

In the record

Taken from the White Mountain Apache reservation when a March 1877 executive order returned this part to the public domain; what remained is the reserve as it stood in the 1899 federal record. The area covers about 51 thousand acres in what is now Arizona.

The 1899 record names Apache as the people of this land.

Today, Apache Tribe of Oklahoma, Fort Sill Apache Tribe, Jicarilla Apache Nation, New Mexico, Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas, Mescalero Apache Tribe, San Carlos Apache Tribe and 3 more carry the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
