Land of the Sioux in Nebraska, ceded 1875 (area 584)
- 1868
Recognized as Native land
By Treaty of Fort Laramie (1868), Lakota (Sioux) and Arapaho
- 1875
Ceded to the United States
The 1899 record: “Cede hunting privilege and all rights to certain territory in Nebraska retained by them under treaty of 1868”
In the record
Part of the land the 1868 Fort Laramie treaty treated as unceded Sioux territory, with hunting rights, in Nebraska; the Sioux gave up these rights in a June 1875 agreement. The area covers about 7.8 million acres in what is now Nebraska.
The 1899 record names Sioux (as named in treaty records) as the people of this land.
How it was taken: a treaty or agreement. The treaty text records an agreement and the Supreme Court describes it as concluded at the culmination of the Powder River War; the later taking is a separate act.
Today, Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, Crow Creek Sioux Tribe, Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, Montana, Lower Brule Sioux Tribe, Lower Sioux Indian Community in the State of Minnesota and 10 more carry the history of the people named here.
Written from the records linked here; open any of them for its sources.
Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
