Partly ceded to the United States

By Treaty of Medicine Lodge (Kiowa and Comanche), 1867

In the record

Set apart for the Comanche and Kiowa by the 1865 treaty, then cut back to a smaller reservation by the 1867 Medicine Lodge treaty, which gave up the rest. The area covers about 43 million acres in what is now Oklahoma and Texas.

The 1899 record names Comanche and Kiowa as the people of this land.

How it was taken: a treaty or agreement. The treaty text records a peace and reservation agreement signed by chiefs and headmen; the Oklahoma Historical Society places it amid conflict on the plains, but the text states no coercion.

Today, Comanche Nation, Oklahoma and Kiowa Tribe carry the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
