Land of the Comanche and Kiowa in Oklahoma, ceded 1867 (area 510)

Ceded to the United States

Named in the record
In the record
Part of the 1865 Comanche and Kiowa reserve that they gave up in the 1867 Medicine Lodge treaty, keeping only a smaller reservation, which the Apache agreed to share. The area covers about 2.9 million acres in what is now Oklahoma.
The 1899 record names Comanche and Kiowa as the people of this land.
How it was taken: a treaty or agreement. The treaty text records a peace and reservation agreement signed by chiefs and headmen; the Oklahoma Historical Society places it amid conflict on the plains, but the text states no coercion.
Today, Comanche Nation, Oklahoma and Kiowa Tribe carry the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
