Reservation of the Comanche and Kiowa in Colorado, Kansas and Texas (area 478)

Shape traced from the 1899 maps; approximate. Open on the map

In the record

Set apart as a reservation for the Comanche and Kiowa by the October 1865 treaty; not a cession. Part of the rest was returned to the public domain by an 1875 act. The area covers about 126 million acres in what is now Colorado, Kansas and Texas.

The 1899 record names Comanche and Kiowa as the people of this land.

This area was not ceded. The 1899 record shows it as a reservation the nation kept, at least until the record ends in 1894.

Today, Comanche Nation, Oklahoma and Kiowa Tribe carry the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
