Land area
Land of the Omaha in Nebraska, ceded 1865 (area 467)
- 1854
Set aside as a reservation
- 1865
Ceded to the United States
In the record
Kept by the Omaha as their Nebraska reserve in 1854; a strip off its north side was ceded in 1865 so the Winnebago could be settled there. The area covers about 181 thousand acres in what is now Nebraska.
The 1899 record names Omaha as the people of this land.
How it was taken: a treaty or agreement. The treaty text records a negotiated cession with payment, but states the land was bought to place the Winnebago on it.
Today, Omaha Tribe of Nebraska carries the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
