Land of the Kansa in Kansas, ceded 1859 (area 421)
- 1846
Set aside as a reservation
- 1859
Ceded to the United States
In the record
Chosen for the Kansa after their 1846 cession; the part beyond what they kept was given up in 1859, to be sold by the United States on their behalf. The area covers about 191 thousand acres in what is now Kansas.
The 1899 record names Kaw (Kanza) as the people of this land.
How it was taken: a treaty or agreement. The treaty text records an agreement signed by 27 named chiefs and headmen and states no duress; the Tribal Treaties Database page reproduces it.
Today, Kaw Nation carries the history of the people named here.
Written from the records linked here; open any of them for its sources.
Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
