In the record

Granted to the Winnebago in 1855 as 18 miles square on the Blue Earth River in Minnesota; the western part was given up in 1859, to be sold by the United States on their behalf. The area covers about 88 thousand acres in what is now Minnesota.

The 1899 record names Winnebago as the people of this land.

How it was taken: a treaty made under documented pressure. MNopedia says the Ho-Chunk signed because they needed money to pay off debts, and the treaty itself directs sale proceeds to pay Winnebago debts.

Today, Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin and Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska carry the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
