Land area
Land of the Ponka in South Dakota, ceded 1858 (area 409)
- 1858
Ceded to the United States
In the record
Ceded by the Ponka in 1858, all their claim to land in South Dakota except a reserve they kept. The area covers about 1.3 million acres in what is now South Dakota.
How it was taken: a treaty or agreement. The OSU treaty text records a negotiated cession in exchange for protection and annuities; the later loss of the reservation came from the 1868 Fort Laramie treaty, not this one.
Written from the records linked here; open any of them for its sources.
Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
