The 1899 record: “All except 18 sections of their reserve to be appraised and sold”

In the record

Part of the Menominee's 1854 Wolf River home; two townships in its southwest corner were ceded in 1856 for the Stockbridge and Munsee, and an 1871 act ordered all but 18 sections sold. The area covers about 65 thousand acres in what is now Wisconsin.

How it was taken: a treaty or agreement. The OSU treaty text records a council agreement to sell land for a stated price per acre; the preamble says the Menominee had no objection to the new neighbors.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
