In the record

Set apart for the Fond du Lac bands of Chippewa in Minnesota in 1854, then ceded in an agreement signed in November 1889 under the Nelson Act. The area covers about 105 thousand acres in what is now Minnesota.

The 1899 record names Chippewa (Ojibwe) as the people of this land.

How it was taken: a treaty made under documented pressure. MNopedia says many Ojibwe owed money to traders, that an 1850 removal order and the Sandy Lake payment disaster preceded the treaty, and that the Ojibwe were open to a deal; the treaty also protected them from removal.

Today, Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians of the Bad River Reservation, Wisconsin, Bay Mills Indian Community, Chippewa Cree Indians of the Rocky Boy's Reservation, Montana, Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, Michigan, Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin, Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and 12 more carry the history of the people named here.
