In the record

Kept for the Miami as a 10-mile-square reserve opposite the mouth of the Abonette (Mississinewa) in the 1818 Treaty of St. Mary's; part of it was ceded in October 1834. The area covers about 23 thousand acres in what is now Indiana.

The 1899 record names Miami as the people of this land.

How it was taken: a treaty or agreement. The OSU treaty text records a cession for a stated payment and improvements, signed by a commissioner and the chiefs and warriors, with no coercion described.

Today, Miami Nation of Indians of the State of Indiana, Inc. and Miami Tribe of Oklahoma carry the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
