In the record

Ceded by the Pawnee bands in 1833, all their land south of the Platte River, in Kansas and Nebraska. The area covers about 8.8 million acres in what is now Kansas and Nebraska.

The 1899 record names Pawnee as the people of this land.

How it was taken: a treaty or agreement. The OSU treaty text shows a signed agreement between a commissioner and the chiefs and head-men, with a cession paid for by annuities, and no coercion is described in it.

Today, Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma carries the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
