Land area
Land of the Chippewa, Ottawa and others in Michigan, ceded 1833 (area 190)
- 1832
Set aside as a reservation
By Potawatomi (St. Joseph, Cold Water, Wabash, and Elkhart Bands) at Tippecanoe River, Indiana (1832)
- 1833
Ceded to the United States
The 1899 record: “cede to the U. S. the tract of land on St .Joseph river opposite the town of Niles, and extending to the line of the stale”
In the record
Set aside for Pokagon's village and band on the St. Joseph River in the October 1832 treaty, then ceded in September 1833. The area covers about 23 thousand acres in what is now Michigan.
The 1899 record names Chippewa (Ojibwe), Ottawa and Potawatomi as the people of this land.
How it was taken: a treaty or agreement. The OSU treaty text records a cession for annuities, goods, reservations and payment of debts and claims, with no coercion described.
Today, Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians of the Bad River Reservation, Wisconsin, Bay Mills Indian Community, Chippewa Cree Indians of the Rocky Boy's Reservation, Montana, Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, Michigan, Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin, Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and 23 more carry the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
