    Ceded to the United States

By Kansa at St. Louis (1825)

In the record

Ceded by the Kansas in 1825, giving up their lands in Missouri and a large area to the west, in Kansas and Nebraska. The area covers about 22 million acres in what is now Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska.

The 1899 record names Kaw (Kanza) as the people of this land.

How it was taken: a treaty or agreement. The Oklahoma State treaty text records a negotiated cession in St. Louis with annuities, with no mention of coercion.

Today, Kaw Nation carries the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
