    Ceded to the United States

By Osage at St. Louis (1825)

In the record

Ceded by the Great and Little Osage in 1825, giving up lands in Missouri, Arkansas and a large area west of them, reaching into Kansas and Oklahoma. The area covers about 47 million acres in what is now Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.

The 1899 record names Osage as the people of this land.

How it was taken: a treaty or agreement. The Oklahoma State treaty text records a negotiated cession in St. Louis; the Kansapedia article describes the Osage losing land through repeated treaties but does not call this one coerced.

Today, The Osage Nation carries the history of the people named here.

Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
