Land area
Land of the Choctaw in Arkansas, ceded 1825 (area 122)
- 1820
Set aside as a reservation
- 1825
Ceded to the United States
In the record
Granted by the United States to the Choctaw in the 1820 Treaty of Doak's Stand as part of a tract west of the Mississippi; the Choctaw ceded this Arkansas portion back in January 1825. The area covers about 5.3 million acres in what is now Arkansas.
The 1899 record names Choctaw as the people of this land.
How it was taken: a treaty or agreement. The Oklahoma State treaty text records a negotiated boundary adjustment prompted by U.S. settlers on the land already granted; no source cited describes duress.
Today, Choctaw Nation, Jena Band of Choctaw Indians and Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians carry the history of the people named here.
Written from the records linked here; open any of them for its sources.
Shapes come from C. C. Royce’s 1899 maps as georeferenced by the US Forest Service. They are approximate and are not legal descriptions of land. Royce recorded land the United States treated as ceded; the shape does not show a nation’s territory.
