A story in 3 steps
Blue Lake comes home
What has a land return looked like?
Not yet reviewed by Taos Pueblo. Taos Pueblo tells this history in its own words on its own website.
1906, taken
In 1906 the federal government took Blue Lake and the land around it, sacred to Taos Pueblo, into a national forest.
Decades of advocacy
Taos Pueblo pressed for the land's return for more than sixty years, including testimony before Congress by its leaders.
1970, returned
On December 15, 1970, Public Law 91-550 restored 48,000 acres including Blue Lake to Taos Pueblo, one of the landmark returns of land to a nation by act of Congress.
